For the love of Russell Westbrook (pt.2)

The kid from Long Beach, California who became a sharpshooter and an integral piece for the Oklahoma City Thunder. The all-star NBA player whose career averages are 21 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. The 17-season veteran may have played his last game in a Clippers jersey.

As a devout Clippers fan, the speculation of Russell leaving the Clippers is a sad one. Especially since he landed on this side of the hallway after his brief stint with the Lakers. It seemed like Russell found an actual home with a Los Angeles franchise and fans who appreciated him. Russell brought an intensity with every possession, every time the ball was in his hands he acted like a general leading the troops in battle. However, this past season he not only took a pay cut but also a role where he would come off the bench.

Like many Clipper fans, I hoped this season would be the one to not only end the dreaded “Clippers curse” but actually be the year they take it all the way. All of the pieces were there, the depth was there, and the makings of a classic Cinderella story was also there. But the curse reared it’s ugly head and even with the sacrifices Russ made for the team they just couldn’t get it done.

Even at 35 years of age he still has some gas in the tank. Russ, in his words, has said that he is the best player in his position. With the level of confidence he has and the ability to still play above the rim along with being an excellent locker room guy, he’s proven to be an asset.

Word around the water cooler is Denver wants Russ. Specifically, Nikola wants to play with Russ. And after losing KCP, Russ would be a great addition to the championship-caliber team. But if the Clippers did make the trade with Denver what would they get in return? They already dropped the ball twice with the Paul George trade. They gave up the farm to get him, then let him go without getting a significant piece in return.

Wherever Russ lands I hope that the city and the fans welcome him and his family with open arms.
